Why Do We Have Morning Breath?

How often do you wake up with a bad taste in your mouth? Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS assumes daily. The foul smelling breath that we start our day with, also known as morning breath is a universal condition and although it is not fully preventable, we would like to explain why it happens and how you can manage it.

You arise from a good night’s sleep and before you can even rub the sand from your eyes you’re overwhelmed by the smell of your own breath. Morning breath is nothing to be ashamed of; it’s simply one form of bad breath. Bad breath, no matter what time it occurs at, is caused by lack of saliva, or leftover food particles that gather on the tongue and in between the teeth. To minimize this condition, it’s important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. It also helps to stay hydrated and avoid eating foods that contribute to bad breath, such as garlic and onions.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth can occur when the saliva glands aren’t working properly. Common causes may include anxiety, stress, aging, and medication side effects. If you experience constant dry mouth, the only permanent way to treat it is to identify the cause. Fortunately, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS can develop a treatment plan with you.

Saliva plays a critical role in cleansing your mouth and digesting food. It also prevents infection by controlling bacteria in the mouth. Dry mouth can range from being a nuisance to something that has a major impact on your general health. If your mouth isn’t producing enough saliva, you may notice prominent symptoms such as dryness in the mouth or throat, bad breath, difficulty chewing, and or/gum irritation. If these symptoms persist, it’s important to visit Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS so he can treat the problem.

How to Care for Dentures

When patients receive dentures, preventing dry sockets is the first order of business, but learning a new oral health regimen is the second. At Enid Dental Care, we understand that getting dentures can be frightening, which is why we want our patients to know that we are anticipating their needs by providing them with information about proper denture care.

There are many kinds of dentures, but what they have in common is that they need to be removed for cleaning every night. Doing this will also give the patient the chance to brush their mouth, including their tongue and any exposed metal, such as implants or a bar support. People should only brush their mouths with soft-bristled brushes, and the same is true while brushing their dentures. But patients should also take care to select a toothpaste which has been approved for use on dentures because toothpaste for normal teeth contains gritty minerals that scratch artificial teeth, which lack natural protective films.

Anytime they are not in the patient’s mouth, dentures should be left soaking in room-temperature liquid. The liquid may be water or a cleaning solution, but it must not be hot enough to warp the denture’s thin plastic. Although it is expected that dentures will need to be refitted on occasion, this should only be done in a dental laboratory by professionals.

Understanding Dry Sockets

While we work hard at Enid Dental Care to ensure our patients understand their post-operational instructions, complications are possible. One of the most common problems following a tooth extraction is a dry socket, so we want our patients to know how to prevent it and how to recognize if they develop one.

When a tooth is removed, it is very important that a blood clot be allowed to form over the extraction site. Without it, the socket will painfully dry out and be at risk of infection. Patients are advised to avoid sipping through straws immediately following surgery, so as not to knock the clot loose prematurely. It is also wise to forego the use of birth control, as it interferes with clot formation, and to avoid smoking or use of tobacco products (although dentists always recommend that).

When patients do suffer from dry sockets, they will usually feel severe pain about two days after the extraction. Difficulties are more likely to happen following complicated extractions which required the doctor to cut through bone or gum tissue. Patients should request an emergency appointment so they may be provided with painkillers, anti-bacterial pills, and medicated wound dressing to moisten the sockets. The dressings will need to be replaced every few days until the healing is complete, but patients usually make full recoveries.

Mouth Guards for Sports

Are you and your family getting involved in sports this season? Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS wants you to know that you may be overlooking an important safety precaution.  Athletes participating in any contact sport are advised to wear some kind of protection for their mouth. A mouth guard helps prevent damage to the teeth and jaw, and also helps prevent injuries to the cheeks, tongue, and lips.

Most sporting goods stores carry mouth guards, but they won’t provide a custom fit.  These mouth guards often end up feeling bulky and uncomfortable, leading to child and teenage athletes in particular not wearing the protection at all.  An ill-fitting mouth guard can even interrupt normal breathing and speaking.

Have your dentist perform a custom mouth guard fitting and get a mouth guard made of thin, hard plastic. Custom mouth guards can be fit over braces to protect your teeth and still fit comfortably. This is an easy precaution to take for athletes, and you can go right back to playing your best!

To learn more about mouth guards and all the services we provide, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

What is Gum Grafting?

Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS aims to can help you correct the negative effects of gum disease.  A gum graft procedure consists of harvesting healthy tissue from the roof of the patient’s mouth and transferring it to the site that needs reinforcement. This gives the deficient gum a replacement and encourages growth of new material around the graft.

When plaque and bacteria build up at the gum line, the gums stretch and form little pockets around the buildup. Even when these little pockets are cleaned out they remain at the gum line and cause the gums to recede.  Receding gums are often unsightly, and if the gums continue to recede, more of the tooth becomes exposed.  When the tooth closer to the root becomes exposed, you experience more sensitivity which can be inconvenient and painful. A gum graft can cover exposed tooth and repair receding gums.

Maintain a Healthy Mouth

Your mouth consists of more than just teeth, which is why taking good care of it is important. Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease – as well as help you keep your (permanent) teeth intact as you age.  Your mouth is a window into what’s going on inside your body and Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS can assist you in keeping it as clean as possible.

In addition to your teeth, your mouth is made up of gums, oral mucosa, the upper and lower jaw, the tongue, salivary glands, the uvula, and the frenulum. If the oral cavity is neglected, it can lead to gum infection. Long-term gum infection may not only result in the loss of your teeth, but it can lead to systemic conditions, such as poorly controlled diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As if you didn’t already have enough reasons to take care of your mouth, the relationship between your oral health and your overall health provides even more.

If you have questions regarding your oral hygiene routine, please give us a call. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

How Diet Relates to Dental Health

The health of our teeth and mouth are linked to overall health and wellbeing. Therefore, to prevent cavities and maintain good oral health, your diet – what you eat and how often you eat – are important factors. Changes in your mouth start the minute you eat certain foods, due to the bacteria in the mouth that converts sugars and carbohydrates to acids. These acids begin to attack the enamel on teeth and although we love to see you at the dental practice of Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, we would rather you eat a balanced diet to improve your smile naturally.

The best food choices for the health of your mouth include cheeses, chicken or other meats, nuts, and milk. These foods protect tooth enamel by providing the calcium and phosphorus needed to remineralize teeth. Other food choices include firm/crunchy fruits (apples and pears) and vegetables (celery and carrots). It’s important to limit your consumption of sugar-containing drinks, including soft drinks, lemonade, and coffee or tea with added sugar. Exposing your teeth to abundant amounts of sugar can lead to tooth decay.

If you have questions about how diet affects your dental health, give us a call. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

Reasons for a Root Canal

If the cause of your teeth pain is serious decay or infection in the tooth pulp, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS may recommend a root canal. A root canal is a multi-step dental procedure that involves removing the infected tooth pulp (and sometimes the nerve) from a tooth and sealing it to protect against future tooth pain. Though the procedure sounds scary, we promise to make you as comfortable as possible before, during, and after root canal treatment.

Not all types of teeth are indications for a root canal. But signs of infection severe enough to require a root canal include: severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure, prolonged sensitivity (pain) to hot or cold temperatures (after the heat or cold has been removed), discoloration (darkening) of the tooth, swelling and tenderness in nearby gums, and a persistent or recurring pimple on the gums. Root canal therapy helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limit the need for ongoing dental work. With proper care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last as long as other natural teeth and often for a lifetime.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness, and swelling (inflammation) of your gums. Because gingivitis can be mild, you may not be aware that you have the condition. However, it’s important to take gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. If you are not maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS is here to help by providing you with routine dental cleanings.

Gingivitis commonly occurs because of films of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth (plaque). Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease, which means that it can be prevented. Generally, gingivitis resolves with good oral hygiene – longer and more frequent brushing, as well as flossing. If the condition is left untreated, gum disease can spread and affect tissue, teeth, and bones, leading to periodontitis which can eventually lead to tooth loss.

If you notice signs and symptoms of gingivitis, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

Exposed Tooth Roots

At Enid Dental Care, Dr. Dennis Morehart enjoys performing cosmetic procedures which can help patients regain their self-confidence, as well as fixing problems with their bite function. One of the most common cosmetic side-effects of periodontal disease is recession of gum tissue, which leaves sensitive tooth roots painfully exposed to cold.

There are other causes of recessed gum tissue, including misalignment, but periodontal disease is the most common. We’ve mentioned before on our blog how plaque accumulates in gum pockets and causes them to enlarge by trapping acid. At some point, the damage will cause the gum tissue to cave in or contract. A deep cleaning can remove the plaque and planing will prevent it from recolonizing the tooth roots, but those roots still need to be covered.

As with a gum pocket reduction, the more mild cases can be fixed by cutting a flap of gum tissue and folding it over the tooth roots. Severe cases may require the attention of a periodontal specialist to do a gum graft, which may use either donor or artificial material. Regardless, patients should be aware that exposed tooth roots are a fixable problem.

Dr. Dennis Morehart, Master of the Academy of General Dentistry, operates Enid Dental Care at 2411 Heritage Trail, Ste #4, Enid, Oklahoma, 73703. To schedule an appointment, call 580-237-2213 or visit EnidDentalCare.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Oral Pathology

Pathology can be defined as the scientific study of the nature of a disease and its causes, processes, development, and consequences. Oral pathology is the specialty that identifies and treats diseases of the mouth and maxillofacial region. Some of the diseases that Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS diagnoses include mouth and throat cancer, mumps, salivary gland disorders, ulcers, and more.

When an abnormality is discovered either by the patient, dentist or healthcare provider, a referral is often made to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Diagnosis is completed through radiographic, microscopic, biochemical and other in-office examinations. Because the mouth is readily accessible, changes indicative of oral cancer or a pathological process can easily be detected in the early stages. Pain is not always necessary to define pathology and is not often associated with oral cancer. However, any patient with facial and/or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer.

If you are concerned about oral cancer, give us a call to discuss your options. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

FDA Issues Warning on Teething Tablets

Dr. Dennis Morehart has treated generations of patients and continues to run a family practice in Enid. As such, our office is concerned by the Food and Drug Administration’s recent warning regarding a popular product for teething babies. On January 27, 2017, the FDA advised consumers to immediately dispose of Hyland’s teething tablets because they contain inconsistent levels of belladonna.

Also known as deadly nightshade, the herb Atropa belladonna has been used since ancient times as a sedative and remains popular among practitioners of homeopathy. However, it is also famed as a poison and causes respiratory failures and seizures. Homeopathic products usually do not require FDA approval prior to being marketed, and in 2010, The Standard Homeopathic Company, the manufacturer of Hyland’s teething tablets, pulled the product after the FDA complained that the dosage of belladonna extract varied considerably between tablets. Hyland’s was reintroduced shortly after, but was pulled again in October of 2016 for the same reason. At the time, the FDA was pressuring Raritan Pharmaceuticals, another homeopathic company, to recall belladonna products distributed at CVS.

No human fatalities have yet been proven to have been caused by The Standard Homeopathic Company’s products. However, investigations are ongoing, and the FDA warns that belladonna is not safe for children under two.

Fighting Plaque by Reducing Gum Pockets

Patients suffering from tooth decay are in good hands at Enid Dental Care. Our treatments stop the progression of periodontal disease and restore the bite function and cosmetics of patients’ mouths. One of the crucial steps of denying bacteria a place to breed is closing gum pockets, so patients should be educated about why it’s done.

Bacteria produces acid and plaque, which stick together and gradually cause the bone and gum tissue they come into contact with to dissolve. In areas below the gum line, the empty pockets where material dissolved are very difficult for patients to clean on their own and become safe havens for more bacteria. This causes the decay process to accelerate as bacteria colonies expand.

During a deep cleaning, Dr. Morehart or a hygienist will remove the plaque or tartar and bacteria colonies, but the pockets still have to be sealed. Usually, this is as simple as making an incision into a healthy portion of the gum, pulling a flap of gum tissue over the pocket, and suturing it. Sometimes, it may require a full gum graft, which involves cutting out a whole portion of the soft palate and sewing it over the pocket. Either way, patients should thereafter have an easier time cleaning their teeth.

Understanding Inlays and Onlays

The Practice of Dr. Dennis Morehart in Enid, Oklahoma offers a number of care options to patients who are suffering from damaged teeth. Dr. Morehart is experienced and highly trained in performing root canals to combat periodontal disease and in placing artificial crowns on lost or infected teeth. But sometimes, tooth damage is much more moderate and doesn’t require such intensive treatments. If the surface of one of the chewing teeth is damaged, a partial crown may be all that is needed.

Partial crowns are divided between inlays and onlays. The difference is merely one of size—inlays fit in between the cusps of a molar or premolar, while onlays replace the cusps as well as the indentation. If the damage to a chewing surface was caused by periodontal disease, Dr. Morehart will drill away the decayed tissue before making an impression of the patient’s mouth. The impression will be sent to a factory where the partial crown will be created, usually by milling porcelain. During a return trip, the inlay or onlay can be affixed to the tooth using dental cement.

Like full crowns and natural teeth, partial crowns have to be maintained through regular oral hygiene. If cared for properly, they can last for decades.

Reduced Radiation with Digital X-Rays

One of dental technology’s most remarkable achievements is the use of digital X-rays to see what’s going on inside your mouth. Radiation from dental imaging has attracted more controversy in recent years as computed tomography (CT) scans become more common in dentistry and as more becomes known about radiation’s long-term effects. Here at the dental practice of Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS our X-rays are panoramic digital images where a digital sensor is placed inside your mouth to take an image and then downloaded into our computer.

Using digital images reduces the radiation by 75%, there is no waiting time for an X-ray to develop, and there are no chemicals used in the process to pollute the environment. While the diagnostic benefits of this technology have been addressed, very few folks may realize that digital radiography is also quite cost-effective. Another added benefit? The digital X-ray is available immediately with a complete view of your mouth in just one shot, reducing your treatment time as well!

If you have questions regarding digital X-rays, please give us a call. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

Dangers of Dental Plaque

Plaque develops when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches), are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay. This is why it’s important to schedule regular dental checkups twice a year with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

When left untreated, plaque buildup leads to gum disease. The first sign of gum disease is gingivitis and you’ll know you have it when you spot blood in the sink after brushing your teeth. Gum disease has been linked to conditions such as diabetes, dementia, as well as cardiovascular disease. We want you to stay as healthy as possible, so to keep plaque under control, brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. In addition, use an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth.

If you are due for a dental checkup, please give us a call. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

How to Keep Tooth Enamel Strong

Tooth enamel is the hard outer surface layer of your teeth that serves to protect against tooth decay. In fact, tooth enamel is considered the hardest mineral substance in your body, even stronger than bone. At the dental practice of Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, we want your enamel to be as strong as the rest of the bones in your body and you can keep it that way by following these simple steps:
  • Limit sugary foods and drinks – bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar from foods and drinks. They produce acids, which soften and wear away your enamel. Chewy candies that stick on your teeth can also cause damage.
  • Eat foods that protect enamel – calcium in food counters acids in your mouth that cause decay. It also helps keep your bones and teeth strong. Milk, cheese, and other dairy products help protect and strengthen enamel. If you don’t eat dairy, look for foods with calcium added.
  • Avoid over-brushing – You can actually wear down your enamel if you brush too fast and hard. Wait for up to an hour after eating sweets or citrus fruits before you brush your teeth.
  • Use fluoride – Fluoride is nature’s cavity fighter because it strengthens your enamel and helps repair the early stages of tooth decay. Using a fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash can help prevent cavities and keep your enamel strong.

Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in the back of your mouth that usually erupt around the ages of 17 and 25. If you still have yours, then Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS may suggest extraction.

Reasons for having them extracted include the teeth themselves being impacted, erupting at the wrong angle, or simply because the patient’s mouth isn’t big enough to store extra molars. Impacted teeth and wisdom teeth that can potentially cause problems, like infections, will need to be removed.

When a wisdom tooth only emerges partially, a flap of skin called an operculum may form over the tooth. This can make the tooth hard to clean, and pieces of food may be caught under the skin. This makes it easy for an infection, called pericoronitis, to develop. It will usually go away on its own, but it causes swelling and pain in the area. If you are deemed a candidate for wisdom tooth extraction, it should only take a few days for you to heal and feel back to normal.

If your wisdom teeth are causing you discomfort, please give us a call. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

Baby Tooth Care Tips

Baby teeth may be small, but they’re important. To help prevent the buildup of plaque bacteria that can lead to decay, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS recommends regularly cleaning your newborn’s gums with a damp washcloth following feedings. It’s important to start cleaning your child’s teeth before they come in to jumpstart a healthy smile.

Wipe the gums off after each feeding with a warm, wet washcloth or a dampened piece of gauze wrapped around your finger. In addition, take measures to prevent baby bottle tooth decay, a disease that causes severe, swift decay of baby teeth. To help prevent it, do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of formula or a sugary drink, such as juice. The possibility of tooth decay is directly related to the number of times that sugar comes in contact with the teeth. Your child’s baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth. Without a healthy set of baby teeth, your child risks having trouble chewing and speaking clearly as they get older.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Hundreds of different types of bacteria live on our teeth, gums, tongue and other crevices in the mouth. Some are helpful, but some can be harmful such as those that play a role in the tooth decay process. At the dental practice of Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, we want our patients to know that good oral and dental hygiene can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay.
When a tooth is exposed to acid frequently – for example, if you frequently eat foods or drinks containing sugar and starches – the repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. This will cause a white spot to appear if the minerals have been lost. When this happens, this is a sign of early decay.
You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:
  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
  • Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking.
  • Visit Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS for professional cleanings and oral examination.

A Guide to How Not to Brush Teeth

We are sure by now that you know how to brush your teeth and do a good job. But are you aware that you can actually brush your teeth wrong and do damage? Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS of Enid, OK wants his patients to understand great dental care to keep teeth healthy. Keep reading to learn what not to do when brushing!

Brushing After Eating
While it definitely helps keep your mouth clean, brushing after eating can also do damage. There are acids in our food that soften our enamel. Therefore, you should wait at least thirty minutes so your enamel has time to re-harden. Otherwise, you may brush away the softened enamel and cause worn-down teeth which leads to cavities and sensitivity. If you are concerned about acid, rinse out your mouth with water after consuming very acidic foods. After thirty minutes, it is good to give your mouth a good scrubbing.

Brushing Too Hard
Another common way to wear down enamel is by brushing too hard. To remove plaque, all you need to do is brush with a light touch and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Stiff bristles or too much force can wear down enamel and irritate gum tissue. Worn down enamel can lead to an increased risk of cavities, sensitivity, and cosmetic issues. Irritated gums can lead to gum recession and sensitivity.

Keep these tips in mind to make sure you are not overdoing it! To schedule your next cleaning and examination with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, call our Enid, OK dental practice or visit our website, www.eniddentalcare.com.

The Benefits of Veneers

Are you a chronic picture-dodger because you do not like the look of your smile? Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS of Enid, OK can give your smile a complete overhaul with dental veneers! Whether you dislike a gap, a crack, discoloration, or a misalignment, veneers can give you a smile you are proud of.

Dental veneers are ceramic shells that are placed right over your existing teeth and are completely customized to your smile. There are many aesthetic dental issues that veneers can improve on, so be sure you ask us about your specific smile if you are wondering!

To apply veneers, Dr. Morehart will first remove a very small amount of enamel from your teeth, equal to the thickness of the veneer that will replace it. After the teeth are prepared, Dr. Morehart will take impressions of them so that custom veneers can be created. During the creation process, you will wear temporary veneers since the process usually takes around a couple of weeks. When the veneers are ready, they are bonded to your teeth and made sure of functionality. The next time someone takes out a camera, you will be happy to flash your smile!

If aesthetic dental issues are causing you stress, be sure to contact us to learn about options like dental veneers. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, call our Enid, OK dental practice or visit our website, www.eniddentalcare.com.

Post-Op Tooth Extraction Care

There are many reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. Tooth decay, gum disease, or even for orthodontic purposes name a few. After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches and you will need to follow strict instructions that Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS will give you. After the surgery, you will need to rest and you should expect the extraction site to bleed a little following extraction. In addition, here are a few things to remember during post-op care.
If bleeding continues for longer than 24 hours you should call our office immediately. Once you return home after the surgery you should rest, but do not lie flat. This could prolong the bleeding. One of our doctors will prescribe you pain medication, as well as cleaning solution for the extraction site, so if you become sore take as directed. It’s important to limit yourself to soft foods such as gelatin, pudding, yogurt, mashed potatoes, etc. so that the stitches are not punctured. When drinking, make sure you do not use a straw, because the sucking motion can loosen your sutures and slow the clotting process.
If you are experiencing tooth discomfort or have questions about post-op aftercare, please give us a call. To learn about services we provide at our practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

Why Not to Do Your Own Orthoodontics

We at the practice of Dr. Dennis Morehart are proud of the work we’ve done to correct our patients’ misaligned teeth. Last year, the American Association of Orthodontists published a public service announcement warning about the dangers non-professionals attempting orthodontics on themselves, and earlier this year, they released a survey which found that 13% of its members had treated a patient who had done their own orthodontics.

Orthodontic treatment does not take time because the doctor is gouging the patient for payments. It takes time because teeth are alive, and moving them through the jaw bone requires time to let the jaw bone rebuild. Moving teeth at whatever pace a person 3D-printing their own aligners decides suits themselves is likely to cause teeth to come loose or fall out.

Some DIY guides also advise people to make their own orthodontic wires out of household products such as hairbands or floss. This is a bad idea because it will likely put too much pressure on the teeth, risking that they will be cut off from their blood supply. Without brackets, the bands may also slide below the wearer’s gum line.

Our office strives to make our service affordable. Please come to us with your concerns instead of doing something which will hurt you and cost much more.

Effects of Thumb Sucking

As providers of pediatric dentistry, we at Dr. Dennis Morehart’s Enid office often advise parents on how to care for their children’s oral health. One of the most common questions we get is at what point a child should break the habit of thumb sucking. That depends on how intense the habit is, but it should end by the time they start losing baby teeth at the latest.

Thumb sucking is a common behavior among babies and toddlers and is usually harmless. However, once the child’s permanent teeth start coming in at around the age of five, the skull bones will fuse together and not be able to spring back from the pressure put on them by thumb or pacifier sucking. This can result in misaligned teeth (especially overbites), misaligned jaws, and deformed oral cavities and bone ridges.

If the child is old enough to understand reason, it is best to include them in efforts to change their behavior. This is because thumb sucking is sometimes motivated by anxiety, and often when the psychological issue is not dealt with, children will substitute thumb sucking with pushing their tongues against their front teeth. This can cause many of the same problems.
