The Root Canal Procedure

Signs you may need root canal therapy include: severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures (after the heat or cold has been removed), discoloration of your tooth, swelling and tenderness in nearby gums, and/or a persistent or recurring abscess on the gums. Fortunately, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, can save any tooth that is badly decayed or infected.

After taking X-rays or examining existing x-rays to show where the decay is located, the procedure starts off with the patient being administered a local anesthetic. Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. He will then be able to remove infected tissue and clean the infection and unhealthy pulp out of the canals. The canals are filled with a permanent material called gutta-percha to keep them free of contamination. After this is done, the filling remains until the tooth receives a permanent filling or a crown. The first few days after your root canal, the tooth may be sensitive, but the over results will be pain free.

If you are experiencing severe tooth pain, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Beware of Cavities

Only Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS can tell you if you have a cavity, and although he has all of the required materials in his office to fill said cavity, he would rather his patients avoid them altogether. “Cavity” is just another way of saying “tooth decay,” and tooth decay is influenced by lifestyle, what we eat, how well we take care of how teeth, and the presence of fluoride in our water and toothpaste.

Many people think only children get cavities, but changes in your mouth as you age make them an adult problem too. As you get older, your gums pull away from your teeth. This exposes the roots of your teeth to plaque and if you eat a lot of sugary or high-carb foods, you’re more likely to get cavities. Cavities are very serious. Left untreated, a cavity can destroy your tooth and kill the delicate nerves at its center which may result in spending extra time and money in the dentist’s chair down the line.  As always, preventive care can keep micro problems from turning into major ones, so remember to brush at least twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque from between teeth and below the gum line.

Pregnancy and Teeth

Pregnancy comes with a lot of bodily discomforts. Swollen ankles, weight gain, and morning sickness only name a few. You may not expect to experience changes in your oral health during pregnancy; however, if you already have gingivitis, the condition is likely to worsen during this time. Because this time is critical for teeth, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS encourages patients to schedule appointments if any changes in the mouth appear during pregnancy.

Primary changes in your oral health are due to a surge in hormones – particularly an increase in estrogen and progesterone – can exaggerate the way gum tissues react to plaque. If the plaque isn’t removed, it can cause gingivitis – red, swollen, tender gums that are more likely to bleed. To help minimize any risks during pregnancy, make sure you give your teeth and gums extra special attention. Regular tooth brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting the dentist regularly will help reduce dental problems that accompany pregnancy. If morning sickness is frequent, rinse your mouth out with water to keep the acid level under control.

If you are pregnant, please notify us when making your next appointment. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

Benefits of Using a Tongue Cleaner

Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS wants you to brush and floss daily, but you should never neglect your tongue after completing these tasks. Some people use a toothbrush to clean the tongue, however, this may not be as effective as using a tongue scraper tool. Tongue scrapers, which are available in most drugstores in various shapes and sizes, have been proclaimed as a way to reduce or eliminate bad breath, but this isn’t their only benefit.

When we sleep, our digestive system remains awake, removing toxins from our body by depositing them onto the surface of our tongue. If we don’t scrape away these toxins, they get reabsorbed by the body and can lead to respiratory difficulties, digestive problems, and a compromised immune system. This oral hygiene practice also promotes general tooth and gum health and removes bacteria and toxins responsible for periodontal problems, plaque buildup, tooth decay and gum infections. Introducing a tongue cleaner/scraper into your oral hygiene routine, can simply boost oral hygiene while helping to prevent bad breath.

Tooth Friendly Diet

At the dental practice of Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS we see it as our responsibility to share information to help our patients make good choices regarding their dental health and good dental health begins with a well-balanced diet. While a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and unsaturated fats will benefit your overall health, there are a few stand out foods and nutrients that can really boost it.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “milk builds strong bones and teeth.” This is true because calcium prevents against tooth decay. Calcium is found in foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt as well as in fish and some vegetables such as kale and broccoli. Crunchy fruits and vegetables – like apples, pears, celery, and carrots – act as a detergent on teeth, wiping away bacteria that can cause plaque. We don’t have to tell you to stay away from sugary snacks, but even healthy foods have sugars in them. Therefore, no matter what you eat it’s always important to brush and floss afterward and remember to visit us twice a year for checkups.

If you have questions about a tooth friendly diet, give us a call. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

How to Prevent Teeth Grinding

Most people probably grind and clench their teeth from time to time. Occasional teeth grinding, medically called bruxism, does not usually cause harm, but when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis the teeth can be damaged and other oral health complications can arise. When this occurs, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS can supply preventive treatment with a custom-fitted nighttime mouth guard.

Although teeth grinding can be caused by stress and anxiety, it often occurs during sleep and is more likely caused by an abnormal bite or crooked teeth. Because grinding often occurs during sleep, most people are unaware that they grind their teeth. However, a dull, constant headache or sore jaw is a symptom of bruxism. If you suspect you may be grinding your teeth, talk to Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS. He can examine your mouth and jaw for signs of bruxism, such as jaw tenderness and abnormalities in your teeth and then fit you with a mouth guard to protect your teeth from grinding during sleep.

If you have questions about bruxism and night guards, please give us a call. To learn more about services provided at the practice, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

Gum Chewing: Helpful or Harmful?

Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, wants you to know that when it comes to chewing gum, it’s the type of gum you chew that makes a difference in whether it’s helpful or harmful to your teeth. The chewing of sugarless gum increases the flow of saliva, which washes away food and other debris, neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth and provides disease-fighting substances throughout the mouth.

For most people, chewing sugar-free gum (especially gum sweetened with xylitol) can be a good preventive measure in situations when tooth brushing and flossing aren’t practical. It’s important to remember that sugar free or not, chewing gum should never replace good dental hygiene practices. Next time you are walking through the sweets aisle, look for chewing gum with the ADA Seal because you can be sure it’s sugarless. All gums with the ADA Seal are sweetened by non-cavity causing sweeteners such as aspartame, xylitol, sorbitol or mannitol.

Are You Flossing Properly?

Daily flossing is an important part of your oral health care routine to help remove the plaque from these areas where a toothbrush doesn’t completely reach. But to truly reap the benefits, you need to use a proper flossing technique. As much as Dr. Dennis Morehart loves to see you in his office, he would rather you understand the proper flossing technique to eliminate bacterial buildup in your mouth that can eventually lead to cavities, bad breath, and gum disease.

  • Start with 18” of floss. Wind most of it around one of your middle fingers and the rest around the same finger on your other hand.

  • Hold floss tightly with about 1” of floss between your hands. Glide floss between teeth with a gentle sawing motion.

  • Hold the floss against each tooth, gently scraping the tooth’s side while moving the floss away from the gum. Repeat on all teeth, including the very back ones.

If you haven’t flossed recently, your gums may feel sore or bleed. However, don’t worry. After five or six days, you’ll remove the built-up bacteria and your gums will feel great.

If you need assistance with your oral hygiene routine or have questions about flossing, please give us a call. Sealants for Kids + Teens

Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS wants your child to have the healthiest smile imaginable, which is why he protects them with dental sealants. Dental sealants are recognized as an effective approach to preventing pit and fissure caries (cavities) in children. They protect the grooved and pitted surfaces of the teeth, especially the chewing surfaces of back teeth where most cavities in children are found.

Sealants are a great way to protect against tooth decay and cavities on your back molars. These teeth are most vulnerable to cavities and decay because they are used in the chewing process and are the most difficult to reach and clean. Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best for your child to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure that they are protected early.

If you have questions about pediatric sealants, give us a call. How Often Do You Brush?

Besides putting a damper on your social life, neglecting to brush your teeth can land you with more than just a few cavities. It could actually lead to life-threatening diseases. Keeping your teeth clean means keeping them strong and healthy, this is why Dr. Dennis Morehart makes it his goal to provide you with the best oral care achievably possible.

It’s simple. If you don’t brush your teeth you will eventually lose them. You should clean your at home with a soft-bristled brush two or three times each day for at least two minutes. The brush that you use should comfortably fit the size and shape of your mouth, and should be replaced every few months. Brushing twice a day can potentially save you hundreds of dollars in restorative dental care in the future. In addition to forming good daily brushing habits, it is also important to have your teeth professionally cleaned.

Why Should I Floss?

Chances are, the last time you visited the dentist and the hygienist asked you when the last time you flossed was, you probably lied. What you don’t realize is that by flossing your teeth daily, you increase the chance of keeping them for a lifetime and decrease the chance of getting gum disease. Dr. Dennis Morehart wants you to keep your natural teeth as long as possible, which is why you should know the reasons to floss.

Flossing is an essential part of taking care of your teeth and gums. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once a day to help remove plaque from the areas between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. This is important because plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing can eventually harden into calculus or tartar. Proper dental care – including regular flossing – can do more than keep your smile attractive. It leaves your mouth healthier and a healthy mouth can help prevent much more serious diseases, some of which can be life threatening.

What is TMJ Disorder?

Although were not always aware of it, some of us might feel a clicking or a popping in our jaws every now and then. If you place your fingers just in front of your ears and open your mouth, you can feel what is called the temporomandibular joint and its movement. This joint controls many jaw functions, like chewing. If the chewing muscles are causing you pain, then Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, may need to treat you for a possible temporomandibular (TMJ) disorder.

Your temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear. Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorder include pain in the jaw joint, clicking of the jaw, ear pain, popping sounds in ears, headaches, stiff or sore jaw muscles, pain in the temple area and/or locking of the jaw. Many of these symptoms can often be associated with other health problems, so only a medical professional can tell you if it is due to a TMJ disorder. Pain relievers and hot/cold compresses are short term methods to provide relief for pain symptoms, but Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, can provide you with a night guard to lessen the pressure on the joint itself.

If you have questions about TMJ disorders, please give us a call. To learn more about TMJ disorders visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213.

Endodontic Retreatment – When a Root Canal Fails

With proper care, even teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime. However, sometimes a tooth that has been treated doesn’t heal properly and can become painful or diseased months or even years after treatment. If your tooth failed to heal or develops new problems, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS can provide you with a second chance, utilizing a procedure called endodontic retreatment.

Endodontic therapy is a complicated procedure that uses files to extract the infected pulp from the root. When the infection remains in the root’s canals, the tooth may not heal, causing it to become reinfected. The first step in endodontic retreatment is non-surgical treatment, which is performed like a typical root canal. Although the procedure is similar to your original root canal treatment, it requires more precision to better remove what was missed before.

If you're experiencing discomfort in a tooth that had a root canal, don't ignore it. The sooner you have endodontic retreatment, the better chance you'll have of saving your tooth and getting relief from your pain. To learn more about the procedure and why an endodontic retreatment is necessary, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information. Understanding the Actions of Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a chemical compound with the formula N20. At room temperature, it is a colorless, non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. In Enid, OK, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS only administers this pain relieving formula to eligible patients.

Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used form of sedation in dentistry. It is administered by having the patient inhale the gas, which is carefully monitored by Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS. You will fall into a euphoric state and feel completely relaxed. All feelings of fear and anxiety fade away, leaving you to sit back peacefully while your dental procedure is performed. In most cases, all dental work can be completed in one visit while you are sedated. Once the procedure is over, the nitrous oxide will wear off fairly quickly and you will probably be able to drive yourself home and return to your daily activities.

You will need to have a preliminary visit with your dentist to make sure that you are an eligible candidate for nitrous sedation. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213. To learn more about Nitrous oxide and services provided at the office, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information.

Straight Teeth are Healthy Teeth

Swollen red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems. In Enid, OK, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, can provide you with a variety of options to straighten your teeth so that you can have a beautiful healthy smile.

When teeth are properly aligned, they’re easier to clean and when your teeth are clean and dental plaque free, you’re less likely to need a tooth filling or gum disease treatment. When teeth are straight, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems.

Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by bacteria. Left untreated, they can cause mouth sores, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, and possible tooth loss.  Correctly aligning your teeth can also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems and increased wear on the tooth enamel.

Oral Cancer Screenings

An oral cancer screening means looking for cancer in the mouth before a person has any symptoms. This can help find cancer at an early stage and when abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat.  Oral cancer screenings are a very important part of the dental visit for the patient. With the advances in modern technology, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, is now able to pinpoint the start of a potential problem much earlier in its evolution.

The oral cancer screening is often completed with an ultraviolet light or similar device that allows us to view issues that can't always be detected by the human eye under normal conditions. During your dental visit, Dr. Dennis Morehart can talk to you about your health history and examine these areas for signs of mouth and/or throat cancer. The screening will consist of a visual inspection of the mouth and palpation of the jaw and neck.

It is important to remember that your dentist does not necessarily think you have cancer if he or she suggests a screening test. Screening tests are given when you have no cancer symptoms. To schedule an oral cancer screening with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK, call 580-237-2213. To learn more about oral cancer screenings and other services provided at the office, visit www.eniddentalcare.com for more information.

Full and Partial Dentures

For patients who have lost all or most of their teeth, dentures are a great option for replacement. Dentures will allow patients to eat and speak normally again. Dr. Dennis Morehart provides patients in our Enid, OK dental practice with full and partial dentures to repair smiles and improve facial structure.

Dentures are a new set of teeth that are able to be taken out. Whether all of the teeth are missing or just most of them, Dr. Morehart has options. Dentures make it possible to eat and speak normally again. They bring your smile back and can even improve your smile. In addition, when teeth are lost, the facial muscles sag and make a person appear older than they are. Dentures keep these muscles in place and retain the shape of the face.

Dr. Morehart offers full and partial dentures. Partial dentures are able to be utilized when there are a few teeth left that can serve as a base for the dentures. Full dentures are able to be applied conventionally or immediately for our patients’ convenience. The benefit to immediate dentures is that there will be no time spent without teeth (if extractions are necessary), however in the future they will need to be re-fit. When gums heal from extractions, they tend to shrink and change shape.

If you are looking to repair your smile and regain confidence talking, laughing, and eating, consider dentures. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS here in Enid, OK, call us at (580) 237-2213 or visit our website, www.eniddentalcare.com

Gum Grafting in Enid, OK

Gum disease can cause some damage to gums that cannot heal on its own. When gums recede, they can cause pain and must be corrected for the health of the gums and the teeth they hold. Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS performs gum grafts right here in our Enid, OK dental practice for those who need additional gum tissue added to an area.

Gum grafting takes tissue from the roof of the mouth and moves it down to where additional tissue is needed. Sometimes when gum disease progresses far enough, it will create deep pockets in the gums which recedes the gum line. Exposed tooth root can cause pain and sensitivity, as well as put the future of the tooth in jeopardy. If untreated, the tooth root can become decayed or eventually lead to the tooth falling out. Gum grafting is needed to repair the natural state of the gums so they can do their job correctly.

Dr. Morehart will cut tissue from the roof of the mouth or an area of the gums where there is excess tissue and he will transfer it down to the area where gums are needed. The tissue is stitched into place and over time, they will grow and heal into a natural gum line.

If you are experiencing sensitive teeth due to exposed tooth root, schedule a consultation with skilled and experienced Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS of Enid, OK. To schedule, call us at (580) 237-2213 or visit our website, www.eniddentalcare.com.

Braces for Straightening Teeth in Enid, OK

A great smile and a healthy mouth go hand-in-hand with straight teeth. Straight teeth are a major desire for many. This is why Dr. Dennis Morehart offers braces to his patients at his Enid, OK dental practice.

Braces are a teeth straightening procedure that works by applying metal bracing to the teeth, providing continuous pressure. The continuous pressure over time moves the teeth into the desired position. Dr. Morehart comes up with a step by step plan so that each movement is in the right direction.

Braces have been around for a long time, but they have continuously changed and advanced. Today’s braces are made of super-strong metal alloys. Metal brackets are bonded to the front of teeth and a metal wire is clipped into the brackets which apply pressure into a certain direction set by Dr. Morehart. The wire is changed out about every four weeks. The duration for wearing braces varies with each case, however it is usually somewhere between one and three years.

If you are considering straightening your teeth, come find out if braces are right for you. To learn more about braces or to schedule a consultation here in our Enid, OK dental practice, contact Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS by calling (580) 237-2213 or by visiting our website, www.eniddentalcare.com

Invisalign in Enid, OK

Dreaming of straight teeth? Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS of Enid, OK offers Invisalign, the nearly invisible teeth straightening system, to his patients looking to straighten up their smile.

Invisalign is a teeth straightening process that works by using clear, plastic aligner trays to gradually shift teeth. Invisalign can treat mild and more difficult cases. Some of the main conditions Invisalign treats are gapped teeth, overcrowded teeth, overbite, underbite, crossbite, and openbite. Dr. Morehart will be able to tell you if your specific case will benefit from Invisalign.

The recommended amount of time to wear the aligners is twenty to twenty-two hours per day. You take them out when eating and when brushing your teeth. The aligners are switched every two weeks, and the new change to each set of aligners will gradually straighten your teeth. For adults, this process usually takes about a year. For teenagers, the average duration is two years.

Invisalign has major advantages over traditional metal braces. For one, the aligners are taken out while you eat, so there are no limitations on what you can eat. They are also taken out when you brush and floss your teeth, so there is no hassle keeping a good oral hygiene routine. Another large advantage is no metallic smile. Invisalign is nearly invisible.

If you are looking to straighten teeth and do not want the hassle of traditional metal braces, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS at our Enid, OK dental practice. Call (580) 237-2213 or visit our website, www.eniddentalcare.com

Dental Bridges to Replace Missing Teeth

Dental bridges are a popular way to replace a missing tooth and restore your smile and functionality of your teeth. Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS offers dental bridges to his patients looking to replace a missing tooth.

Dental bridges work by using the teeth adjacent to the space where there is a missing tooth. The adjacent teeth are reshaped and crowns are added to them with the replacement tooth in the middle. Replacing a missing tooth will prevent other teeth from shifting, it can restore your ability to talk and chew, and it will allow the jaw to keep its normal shape.

During your first appointment, Dr. Morehart will reshape the adjacent teeth. Impressions of the area will be taken to send to a dental laboratory so customized crowns and the replacement tooth can be created. During the time the laboratory is creating the bridge, a temporary bridge will be placed so you can continue normal use of your teeth. When the new bridge is ready, it will be cemented into place. Dr. Morehart may want to follow up with you to make sure bite and function is ideal.

Dental bridges are usually made of metal or porcelain, or a combination. With good care, dental bridges have been known to last over fifteen years.

If you are missing a tooth and looking for a long lasting way to replace it, dental bridges may be the option for you. To schedule a consultation at our Enid, OK dental office, call us at (580) 237-2213 or visit our website, www.eniddentalcare.com

Scaling and Planing to Fight Gum Disease

Gum disease needs to be taken control of before it becomes severe. It is for this reason that Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS of Enid, OK provides scaling and root planing to his patients with gum disease.

Scaling and planing is the process of cleaning the teeth between the gums, down to the root, and smoothing out rough spots on the root. Rough spots on the root can trap and harbor bacteria, making it difficult to clear up gum disease. When hardened plaque causes the gums to recede, bacteria can reach the gum pockets, deep down to the tooth’s root. In order to clear up the gum disease, the teeth need to be scraped clean.

A local anesthetic may be used to numb the gums and the tooth roots. A scraping tool is used to remove plaque and tartar. The tooth’s rough spots are then smoothed out. Scaling and planing can take a few appointments, as the mouth is usually worked on in sections. After the process is complete, a regular oral heal routine of brushing twice daily and flossing once daily will be recommended to continue on the way to healthy gums.

If you have red, irritated, or bleeding gums, do not hesitate to come in our Enid, OK dental practice to see skilled and extensively experienced, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS. To schedule, call (580) 237-2213 or visit our website, www.eniddentalcare.com.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Having wisdom teeth removed has become somewhat of a notorious procedure. However, being a little more prepared for the procedure and the after-care can settle nerves and facilitate a smooth healing process, which is why Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS of Enid, OK would like to share information about wisdom teeth and the process of having them extracted.

Wisdom teeth often come with problems. Sometimes they will grow in at an angle, only partially erupt, or stay stuck within the jawbone. These issues can cause damage to other teeth, pain, and cause decay and gum disease. Even if wisdom teeth grow in correctly, sometimes it is still recommended that they be taken out for preventative reasons. Wisdom teeth are so far back in the mouth that cleaning them can be difficult, which can lead to decay and gum disease.

The procedure starts by Dr. Morehart making an incision in the gums to access the bone tissue holding in the tooth. The bone is removed and the tooth is rocked back and forth until it is pulled free. Incisions are not always needed, but if they are, before the area is stitched up, Dr. Morehart will clean the extraction site. Afterwards, instructions to lessen bleeding and allow a clean healing will be given. A soft foods diet is recommended until healing has progressed.

If you suspect your wisdom teeth are growing in, schedule an appointment with Dr. Dennis Morehart DDS of Enid, OK by calling (580) 237-2213 or visiting our website, www.eniddentalcare.com.

Night Guards

Teeth grinding, called bruxism, is a disorder that can damage teeth, restorations, and cause a lot of pain. Here at Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, we have been protecting our patients that grind their teeth by creating a custom night guard to wear while sleeping.

Bruxism can be especially bad at night when you are unware you are grinding your teeth. Clenching and grinding wears away and loosens teeth and restorations. The pressure from the clenching can also cause jaw pain, facial pain, and headaches. This can eventually lead up to TMJ dysfunction.

Dr. Morehart creates a custom night guard to protect your teeth and alleviate the pain caused by grinding. He first takes an impression of your teeth. Acrylic, a hard, durable plastic is then molded over the impression, forming the shape of the mouth piece. This way of custom creating the night guard assures a comfortable fit in your mouth. Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a great option to restore teeth that are weak or fractured but still have the root structure intact. Tooth restoration is a vital part of keeping oral health. Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS has been repairing the health and the smiles of his patients here at our Enid, OK dental practice.

A dental crown is a cap that goes on top of an existing tooth. The porcelain finished crowns have a natural look to them, so they blend in with the rest of your natural teeth, restoring your smile. To begin applying a crown, Dr. Morehart will file and reshape the enamel of your tooth. An impression of your tooth and the surrounding teeth will be taken and sent to a laboratory so a custom crown can be created. This laboratory process usually takes between two and three weeks, so during that process Dr. Morehart will place a temporary crown. When ready, the crown is then bonded to your tooth permanently. Crowns will usually last about ten to fifteen years with a regular oral hygiene routine.

Root Canal

Infected teeth are painful and leaving them untreated can lead to much worse problems. Root canal therapy often has a scary reputation. But with modern advances and appropriate pain medications, root canals can be performed with only mild discomfort. Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS has been helping his patients restore their oral health by performing root canal therapy.

When the center of a tooth, dental pulp, becomes exposed due to a crack or decay in the tooth, bacteria can build up. This can cause an infection or an abscessed tooth, as well as major swelling and bone loss at the tip of the root.

To begin a root canal procedure, Dr. Morehart will first drill an access hole to the pulp. The pulp and other decayed tissue and debris are removed and the tooth is cleaned out. Dr. Morehart will then fill the tooth with gutta-percha, a sealant. A filling is then placed over the access hole. In some cases, Dr. Morehart may want to place a crown on top of the tooth for extra protection.

Signs that root canal therapy is needed include prolonged sensitivity, pain while chewing, and a dark spot on the tooth. Signs the gums may show include swelling, tenderness, or a reoccurring pimple near the affected tooth.

If you are experiencing prolonged tooth pain and sensitivity, make sure to come visit us at Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS in Enid, OK. To schedule an appointment, call (580) 237-2213 or visit our website, www.eniddentalcare.com

Inlays and Onlays

If you have heard someone use the term partial crown, they are talking about inlays and onlays, which our dentist Dr. Dennis Morehart provides. Inlays and onlays are a dental procedure performed to strengthen a tooth and prevent damage if it is weakened and at risk of breaking. It is a less invasive procedure than covering a tooth with a crown completely. An inlay is used when there is damage and it must be placed partially inside the tooth, while an onlay goes right on top of a tooth that doesn’t have as much damage to the cusps of the tooth.

Before placing inlays and onlays, we must first remove any decayed portions of the tooth. Then, an impression is made and sent to a lab where the inlay or onlay is made. In approximately 2-3 weeks, the restoration is complete and can be bonded to the tooth. We do this with very strong cement for a stable hold. Inlays and onlays last about the same time as crowns, which is approximately 10-15 years. The better a patient takes care of their teeth, the longer it lasts.

Digital Panorex

Here at our Enid, OK General Dentsitry, we utilize advanced technology for a variety of diagnostic and dental procedures, including the Panorex digital imaging system. Panorex is an imaging machine that can identify a wide range of issues with the teeth, gums and bone that traditional x-rays are not able to find. We use this technology to aid in diagnosing orthodontic and dental problems while also looking at the overall structure of the teeth and mouth.

Patients who come into our office to use the Panorex will go through the following steps:

1. The patient comes into our office and sits on the Panorex chair

2. Their chin rests on a small ledge on the machine, while we position it properly

3. The Panorex machine rotates around their head at a 360-degree angle

By orbiting the head at 360 degrees, in about 20 seconds, the machine captures high quality images of the teeth, gums, head, bones and sinuses. With these images, Dr. Dennis Morehart is able to make sure the patient’s teeth are functioning as they could, as well as finding reasons for pain or other issues the patient is experiencing.

Visit our Enid, OK office to take advantage of this innovative imaging technology! For more information about Dr. Dennis Morehart and the services he offers at his practice, visit www.eniddentacare.com or call (580) 237-2213 to schedule an appointment.

Veneers

If you’re unhappy with the way your teeth look, veneers are an effective method for reshaping and redesigning your smile. Whether your teeth have stains, gaps, crack, chips or other issues, you can get the smile you’ve always wanted with veneers. Veneers are thin, ceramic shells that cover the existing tooth structure in your mouth, and we can use them to transform your smile.

Having veneers placed usually only takes two to three visits. During the first visit, Dr. Dennis Morehart will discuss the shape and look of the smile you want to accomplish, and then we will prepare your teeth. Dr. Morehart prepares teeth for veneers by removing some of the enamel on the surface of your teeth. The amount of enamel that is removed will be nearly equal to the thickness of the veneers. This ensures that your smile will still feel natural and not bulky after the procedure.

Once the enamel has been removed, Dr. Morehart takes an impression of your mouth so that the veneers can be fabricated to fit your existing teeth. This fabrication process takes between 10 to 14 days and is done in a laboratory of the highest standards. You will be provided with temporary veneers during your wait. Then the final veneers are bonded to your teeth to create an attractive smile that looks and feels natural.
