Dental Health and Fluoride

Fluoride is a natural occurring mineral that helps prevent cavities in children and adults by making the enamel more resistant to the acid attacks that cause tooth decay. It is naturally found in most water sources, including rivers, lakes, wells, and even in the oceans. If you are prone to developing cavities, Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS, can apply fluoride directly to your teeth during your dental visit.

As mentioned, fluoride is found in water, but it can also be found in food. The fluoride we consume from foods and beverages continues to provide a topical benefit because it becomes part of our saliva, constantly bathing the teeth with tiny amounts of fluoride that help rebuild weakened tooth enamel. It can also be applied to the teeth through fluoridated toothpaste and mouth rinses. However, fluoride treatments that Dr. Dennis Morehart, DDS provides in-office contain a much higher level than the amount found in toothpaste and mouth rinses.
